got no job? write a fancy resume and become an ‘IT professional’

You’ve got no job?  No real skills?  How about oozing technobabble? No?  Well, watch some Star Trek, play some Warcraft/Halo and come back in a week.

Now, fire up MS Word, find a ‘Create Resume Wizard’ and write yourself a resume.  Lie.  Make it look impressive.  Send it to all the places you can think of, starting with itwire.com.au – and despite my previous post this is not an Aussie-bashing day.

Well, chances are you’re on your way to making some $50-$100/hr until the people who hired you figure out that you really do not know that much.

Well, if you get as lucky as this guy, you might even mention in your blog that you’re “not completely computer-illiterate”.

M.Sc. in … Linux?

Blogged under l'Informatique by tejot on Tuesday 21 March 2006 at 18:34

I decided to post a few tech. entries on the blog in order to not worry you too much – I’m bound to remain slightly torn between the worlds of humanities and comp. sci.

What caught my attention was the introduction of a Master’s program in Linux at the Charles Sturt University in Australia. I’m a windows programmer, an NT administrator, and above all, a long follower of the MS regime. It’s far from perfect, I admit, and if I could switch, Linux or OSX would be it. But a Master’s degree in Linux?

This is all wrong. Specific knowledge of any tool belongs to the world of trade – the world of diplomas and certifications. Having knowledge of one tool without the premise of the theory behind it robs one of the analytical potential needed to create. You may disagree, but generally everybody can see a difference between someone with a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering and someone with a diploma in Computer Engineering from a community college. The difference is not always immediately apparent, but it’s there and will continue to emerge with time.

me vs. mindnumbing technology

Blogged under Musings by tejot on Tuesday 21 March 2006 at 18:04

Browsing through the recent advancements in tech. gadgets, which will surely find its way to either the trashcan or some ultimate geeks’ collection, I chanced upon this truly infernal invention. Now, some of you may find this anywhere between amusing and unnerving, but for me it’s plain infernal.

An alarm clock.

Innocent, right? Not when you’re like me – surrounded by a minimum of two alarm clocks with ear-piercing, high-pitched buzzers, which you can still sleep through, or better subconsciously snooze. Alarm clocks are my official enemy Especially this one.

An alarm clock that buzzes until you solve a puzzle? Every morning? How about an alarm clock that pumps caffeine or adrenaline into my veins 15 minutes before attempting to wake up. Who comes up with these ideas? :|

Looking at the bright side, if you’re like me, you’d break it the first morning. So don’t buy me this. Not worth it, and if you ask me, way overpriced for a single-use. :)

a neck injury…

Blogged under Conversations by tejot on Tuesday 21 March 2006 at 17:48

This will not be my ‘typical post’, but I since can’t stop laughing, I thought I’d share this with you. So this morning I call a friend of mine, who turns out to be quite upset. Notwithstanding all the reasons for her bad mood, one of them was that our mutual friend had a neck injury.

Well, based on my friend’s tone of voice and the fact that the other friend was put into a neck brace made this sound really awful. And being the good friend that I sometimes am, I decided I should visit right away.

To my surprise, she came out with a huge smile on her neck-brace-supported face. Yes, she was in pain (though much less due to her meds) and yep, she was definitely feeeeeling those meds. It turns out that she only pulled a muscle and perhaps mildly dislocated her collar-bone.
